I began trout fishing 66 years ago and like many others who wield a fly rod, I started my angling journey as a spin fisher. However, almost from the very beginning, I was a sight fisher. I learned very early that while I caught a few fish when casting far out into a river or lake I saw an equal number cruising very close to the shore. I quickly became attracted to these fish that fed almost at my feet, attracted mostly because they were so excitingly visible. I stared at the phone in contemplation. Once a year we travel north to meet up with our sons to spend a few days fishing and socialising at the wonderful Creel Lodge on the Tongariro River. Last season we were invited along to a Rotary Meeting and Dinner following Peter (Trout Fisher Editor) and myself agreeing to contribute some published Trout Fisher recipes to be included in their Turangi Rotary Trout Fishing Cookbook. Trout Fisher copy deadline was today but I went fishing instead! Accompanied by my friend Rob Blackbeard from the Nelson Trout Fishing Club we headed over the hill into Marlborough and rainbow trout country. On the drive over we talked about our collective fishing seasons and concluded that while times and resources have changed, we are still out there catching trout on the fly because we enjoy it. We’d both had some stellar fishing, with Rob ranging far and wide, and my season largely spent fishing and exploring closer to home on local water.
