ON July 14, 1997, The White Stripes made their debut live apearance, playing three songs during an open mic night at Detroit’s Gold Dollar. Twenty years later, Jack White, the band’s creative mastermind, has announced plans for a new solo album, his third, which he is recording in New York and Los Angeles. In the intervening two decades, much has happened to White – he is no longer simply a rock star, but he is also a songwriter, producer, label boss, businessman, impresario and collector of esoterica ranging from vintage comic books to modernist furniture. It’s not bad going, admittedly, for a man who began his professional career at the age of 15, working as an apprentice furniture upholsterer.
