Somewhere along the line, it all started to fall apart. No, I’m not talking about a rocky relationship, a home-improvement project, or the best-laid vacation plans gone awry. It was simply my scheme to get a few plants into the ground. There were not-so-subtle warning signs: A late-season frost took out the basil; I never thought it was warm enough for the tomatoes; and everything seemed to vacillate between being overwatered and underwatered. But it takes grit, imagination, and flexibility to embrace a primitive ancestral cabin in the Canadian hinterlands and make it the core of one’s existence. Luckily, Colette van den Thillart has all these attributes in spades. In 1998, she inherited her Norwegian great-uncle’s one-room log cabin. The tiny home, built in the 1940s sans electricity, is in Minden, a pristine area of deep forests and clear lakes near Al gonquin Park that’s a two-and-a-half-hour drive northeast of Toronto. THOMAS HAMEL HAS DRAWN all the threads of his globe-trotting life together in the elegant apartment he shares with his partner, George Massar, in the heart of Sydney.
