The city also sparked his latest collection of breezily elegant goods that dress up or down with ease. shellwork can trace its roots to ancient Greece, where grottoes decorated with the stuff were constructed as shrines to the Muses; the Romans built shell-clad nymphaeums throughout their empire. Flash-forward to the Renaissance: Grottoes resurfaced, along with much else from the classical world. It’s been a series of revivals ever since, especially during the 18th century, when Europeans returning from the Grand Tour spread a rage for shellwork across the Continent. WHEN BUNNY WILLIAMS’S CLIENTS asked her to decorate a 15-year-old Mediterranean Revival house in Palm Beach, the three of them agreed that the house—whose style harks back to the 1920s designs of local starchitect Addison Mizner—should “look settled, like it had always been there.” The retired couple already had one grandchild and hoped for more. With this in mind, they asked the original architect, Jeffery W. Smith, to add a wing while redoing the pool and landscaping. Williams’s job was to provide that forever look, but one that was by no means dusty or dated. So named because of its exterior bands of red brick and coral stone, the 1928 manse overlooking the ocean was designed by Maurice Fatio, the legendary architect to Rockefellers and Vanderbilts whose opulent homes inspired Cole Porter to quip: “I want to live on Maurice Fatio’s patio.” Originally called Casa Eleda, the elaborate Italian Romanesque–style house was designed for banker Mortimer Schiff and his wife, Adele (Eleda is Adele backward).
