WHEN IRISH FURNITURE designer Eileen Gray stumbled upon a display of lacquer screens at a London furniture repair shop in 1898, she marched upstairs to question craftsmen about the lustrous decorative finish. She resolved to replicate it and sought out Japanese master Seizo Sugawara, who taught her the nearly 22-step Eastern art form. By the 1920s, lacquered screens and high-sheen furniture had become hallmarks of her emerging Art Deco influence and helped propel the style to prominence in European and American design. Lacquer techniques date back to the Warring States period (475–221 BCE) in China and the ancient civilization Hemudu, a waterlogged site south of the Hangzhou Bay.
