Lucrezia Buccellati Wildenstein “The pearl is my favorite,” confides Lucrezia Buccellati Wildenstein. She’s speaking of the Ombelicali, Buccellati’s gemstone-and-gold necklaces designed by her great-grandfather Mario. Known as the Prince of Goldsmiths, the Milan maison founder created the piece (named for its navel-brushing plunge) in the 1930s for poet Gabriele d’Annunzio to grace his numerous lovers’ decolletages. HIKING IN THE FRENCH ALPS takes agility, a keen eye, and a tireless pull toward nature—all of which, for Emmanuel Tarpin, was solid training ground for jewelry design. “I’d go on hikes with my parents and find rough quartz, which I began collecting,” says the Annecy, France, native and graduate of Haute École d’Arts Appliqués in Geneva who had secured a spot on the high jewelry bench at Paris’s Van Cleef & Arpels by the age of 22. “I’ve always been inquisitive and eager to explore new things.” To be sure, his childhood brought plenty of fodder. WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG, my husband, Olivier, and his identical twin brother, James, often spent time here at Le Jonchet with their uncle Hubert and Philippe [Venet], his partner and my husband’s godfather. It’s not far outside of Paris, so after we met, Olivier and I too could hop over from London for weekend visits. Admittedly, he didn’t get it right last time. Garrow Kedigian’s old Park Avenue apartment, just a few blocks from this new place in The Carlyle, was memorable no doubt: The Carolina blue library is still an Internet favorite, and the velvet banquette with jangly bullion fringe became a calling card for the designer’s louche, playful brand of classicism. But a single misstep—wedging his office in the cramped secondary bedroom—kept the place from feeling like home. “I spend 99.999 percent of my time in my office,” he estimates. FROM TIME TO TIME, Renvy Graves Pittman turns up horse-shoes in her garden, relics from the days when mountain trails traversed the original Bel Air estate in the Santa Monica foothills of Los Angeles. “It was country; there were dirt roads out here,” she says. Built by Marston, Van Pelt & Maybury of Pasadena in 1929, the house was one of the few in Alphonzo Bell’s new settlement designed in the Mediterranean Revival style. WHEN I LAUNCHED VERANDA in the spring of 1987, I sought to create a magazine that I would want to read. While everyone appreciates beauty, a diverse audience has different tastes and interests, and a magazine should reflect that. My one caveat was that whatever the style, the design must be the best of that genre. I knew that if I was inspired, the magazine would inspire others. From the onset, quality was paramount. I wouldn’t settle for anything less than the finest photography, writing, paper, and printing.
