WHEN SUZANNE TUCKER was approached by longtime clients about creating a family getaway at Yellowstone Club, the private ski and golf community in Big Sky, Montana, her immediate response was, “I love doing mountain houses!” Indeed they suit her: The San Francisco–based designer is well-known for creating interiors with evocative visual and textural layers that make brilliant use of natural materials and light, both of which are in high supply in the open, elevated terrain of the American West. EARLIER THIS YEAR the design world lost one of its greats: Robert Kime, known for being the interior designer to King Charles III before his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died. Antiques dealer extraordinaire, global textile virtuoso, and brilliant collector are among other epithets that come to mind. But his most fundamental, if informal, designation—and the one Kime would have felt most comfortable accepting—was ardent devotee of beauty. It was his insatiable curiosity about history, archaeology, and material culture that propelled Kime to travel the world in search of design discoveries—from Iran, where he gained nearly unparalleled knowledge of antique rugs, to, more recently, Japan on a textile pilgrimage with friend and client Tory Burch. “EVERY SHELL HAS ITS OWN LITTLE STORY,” says artist and textile designer Lulu Dekwiatkowski. In the almost six years she has resided in Lyford Cay, Bahamas, the Lulu DK founder has foraged for and acquired thousands of the ocean’s confections—bulbous cowries, ombré pink moon scallops, and stylus-like episcopal miter shells. A self-proclaimed hunter-gatherer, Dekwiatkowski has always collected, but it wasn’t until she was renovating her house in the islands that she turned her cache into a new medium for her artistry. “My front entrance felt very bland, and instead of just painting it, I thought it would be very cool to do something with shells—it needed that kind of depth,” recalls Dekwiatkowski, who began creating a simple border of very small shiva shells.
