“Here, I present to President and Mrs. Bush a pair of ballet slippers, which I hand-beaded, as a Christmas gift. The Lucite case, made by the White House Carpentry Shop, supported the slippers. The man next to me is Chief Usher Gary Walters, who was in charge of the Residence at that time,” notes Nancy.
The Nutcracker ballet is a perennial favorite performance during the holidays. In 1990, Mrs. Barbara Bush decided to honor this beautiful tale. The White House decorations featured ballet slippers, porcelain dolls, and wooden soldiers in accordance with this motif. The completed tree for the Blue Room contained 50 pairs of hand-beaded ballet slippers. Nancy Clarke selected the fabric for the slippers, and Capezio, a dancewear apparel company, provided the fabric pattern. White House…
