When bright blue skies herald October, it is time to pack away the folding chairs and picnic-table umbrellas, store the flip-flops and beach towels, and get ready for autumn’s harvest of pumpkins, gourds, and decorative bittersweet vines. After a summer of record heat over most of the country, the cool days awaiting us will certainly be welcomed. Decorating for the season can be as simple as placing a plump, orange pumpkin on the porch. If you adhere to the philosophy that more is better, try adding tall dried corn shocks, pots of yellow or bronze chrysanthemums, and a few white gourds. Regardless of how you embellish your living spaces, the elements that proclaim this seasonal change are cozy and comforting. I can’t think of a better way to warm up…

In a studio overlooking the garden of her eighteenth-century West Oxfordshire dwelling—a Georgian charmer built of mellow Cotswold stone—Sue Rangeley produces bespoke treasures for contemporary interiors. What was originally the property’s stable now brims with the makings of a career wrought in wonder. From an early age, Sue was entranced by the exquisite beauty of the natural world. “The rural idyll of English country life stirred my imagination,” she says. Generally speaking, I’m not keen on small spaces. When we built our house in Maine more than thirty years ago, my husband and I were in agreement about a cathedral ceiling, few doors on the first floor, an open staircase, and a balcony overlooking a brook and neighboring farmland. So my pleasant reaction to a very small space in the very small village of Reepham, England, where my daughter’s mother-in-law, Ann, lives, took me by surprise. It was almost dark that brisk fall evening when we walked through the center of the village in late October 2013. Autumn hues warm the living room of the Briggs’s dwelling, from the vivid kilim rug to the softer tones in the draperies at the French doors. The doors themselves were rescued from the attic, hidden away after an earlier remodel. Stepping into Lynn and Steve Briggs’s inviting home, it’s difficult to imagine the structure was once considered a tear-down. But because it occupied a lovely tree-shaded lot on the couple’s favorite street, they were able to look beyond the less-than-flattering prior remodels and see the beauty in the bones. Lynn especially welcomed the challenge of bringing it back to life.
