When Steph Catley was six years old, she tagged along to her brother's football training sessions. She'd run along the sidelines and kick the ball in front of the parents to “show off”. “They said, ‘Oh, she can play. Why doesn't she just play with the boys?'” Catley, 29, recalls. Her mum yielded, she became the sole girl on her big brother's football team, and that's where she stayed. For years. Grace Brown In 2021, Grace Brown won Vogue's first Future Innovators competition with her humanoid robot, Abi. Now, she's the CEO and co-founder of a robotics and AI startup Andromeda Robotics. In 2021, in celebration of the institution's 40th anniversary, the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) acquired the works and will display them for the first time this month. On Women (Penguin, $35) by Susan Sontag. For the first time, trailblazing American critic, activist and thinker Susan Sontag's feminist essays have been collected into a single, brilliant tome. This mustread book offers a searing and insightful vision of womanhood, digging into topics including ageing, power and the workforce with Sontag's trademark incisive voice. Though these essays were mostly written in the 1970s during the height of second-wave feminism, they are still strikingly relevant for the modern reader.
