The rise of the individual was one of fall’s biggest takeaways, a mandate made clear not just by the array of fresh faces gracing a number of influential runways but by the varied haircuts that often accompanied them. At shows like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Céline, the backstage lineup was a wild topography of coifs that ranged from seemingly self-inflicted shags to free-form halos of curls. The over-the-counter painkillers we reach for when we have a headache, cramps, or fever— Motrin, Aleve, Advil—have always seemed a benign form of self-medication. But the FDA is now advising us to think carefully before popping these pills. In light of new data, the authority strengthened its warning in July that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs)—as these medications are classified—can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. The only exemption is aspirin, which thins the blood. Tylenol, meanwhile, carries its own risk: Excessive use of acetaminophen is linked to liver damage.
