The département of Charente-Inférieure (which became Charente-Maritime in 1941) didn’t want to miss out on the Industrial Revolution. As early as 12th April 1877, the local elected assembly brought up the matter of creating a railway line on the island of Ré. The State awarded a concession to the département for the lines of the “first network”, which also included other lines on the continent as well as those on the island of Oléron. The département transferred such rights to the Jeancard group by an agreement signed on 3rd November 1892. On the island, the first passenger train ran on 9th July 1898, and the line was opened to goods traffic on 1st September the same year. 1 Assembly of the propeller protection takes place by soldering on a sheet of thick cardboard, to which one of the “miscellaneous templates” from plate 3 is glued (see central folder of VL 87). 2 The bottom part of the propeller protection is made using the relevant templates from plate 3. This bottom part is cut out of 0.2mm thick brass sheet. The front panel is cut ca. 1mm larger than required, then filed down once the soldering is completed. The network was built economically by the Germans before WWI. After WWII, the region became Polish, and the railways were operated and modernized by the PKP (Polish national railways). Through the flatlands The area being largely flat, no civil engineering works were required. The railway mainly served agriculture, but also carried a sizeable number of passengers, as in those days there were very few road vehicles. Only the largest stations featured stone buildings. Decline began in the 1980s and the end came in the 1990s, shortly after the collapse of the communist regime and the advent of large numbers of cars and lorries. Stéphane wanted lightweight track, of the type found in the Decauville catalogues. He therefore decided to build it all himself: Peco code 60 nickel silver rail, soldered onto copper-clad epoxy sleepers. For the turnout, he wisely opted to meet Bernard Daillan, of the Escadrille Saint-Michel, who explained how to build a turnout according to the diagram Jacques Royan had given him. “Down to work”! I have been living in Sweden for the last four years. While travelling around Scandinavia, I discovered a narrow gauge line preserved by a group of enthusiasts. That’s all it took to renew my old dreams of a layout in H0-9. SWEDISH INSPIRATION I was inspired by the line that connects Västervik, a town located on the Baltic coast, some 220km south of the Stockholm archipelago, to Hultsfred, located 70km to the west, inland. This stretch of 891mm gauge (3 Swedish feet) was built in 1879 for passenger and goods traffic by the private company HWJ (Hultsfred-Westerviks Järnvag, Järnvag meaning “railway” in Swedish).
