The phrase ‘built not bought’ can be a sliding scale. It doesn’t have to mean you tackled every single part of a build, from rust repair to paint, interior and building your own engine and gearbox. Not many people have the time, or ability, to acquire all the skills required to do that, though we’re in awe of those who do. For others, it’s enough to just do some of the main jobs on a build, farming other more difficult parts out to specialists. I have gone a bit off piste with this month’s VW Toys submission, and I hope you’ll forgive the self-indulgence. When Editor Paul told me this was going to be a Hebmüller special, it brought some wonderful memories flooding back. So here goes… My father was in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany during the post-WWII period, supporting the Berlin Airlift. I was born in the US Zone in Frankfurt during that time. Though I was only young at the time, I remember later living in Tripoli, Libya when my father was stationed there and bought a new 1953 Oval Window Volkswagen (see picture above). ’64 BRAZILIAN 23-WINDOW It’s a familiar story; boy grows up with VWs in the family and it sends him down a lifelong path of Volkswagen addiction. For Sebastien Ollevier from France, it was his uncle Didier who was responsible for infecting the whole family with the VW virus. Seeing that uncle Didier was only 10 years older than Sebastien, they were more like brothers and, when Didier bought and restored a Beetle at age 18, Sebastien got as involved as he could. Sebastien had just reached double figures by the time that project was finished, but was already dreaming of the day he would own a Volkswagen himself. I can well imagine how he must have felt for, after getting into cars when I had just reached double figures myself,…

It was on a Saturday in July 1949 that a mysterious fire broke out in the Hebmüller factory in Wuppertal, Germany. Nobody is sure of the cause, but when it spread to the paint shop, it instantly turned into an inferno and the effect was disastrous. Overnight, it brought production of the Volkswagen-based Hebmüller roadster to a halt, and ultimately led to the premature closure of Joseph Hebmüller and Sons. The company was founded in 1889, building horse-drawn carriages, and then later, car bodies. Its specialities were cabriolets and what were known as Pullman-bodied saloons, or luxury sedans. Customer base Among its customers were Hanomag, Opel and Hansa-Lloyd, but it was also commissioned by the British Army to build 15 cabriolet bodies to fit on Humber chassis after the War.…

CUSTOM ’50 HEBMÜLLER They say you should never meet your heroes. Well, for as long as Dave Kindig of Bitchin’ Rides TV fame, and owner / designer of Kindig-it Design can remember, the Type 14A Hebmüller has been his hero car. In spite of all the incredible rides he’s built over the years, all of them Bitchin’ of course, none have even come close. If you’re familiar with the guy and the show, then you’ll know he holds Volkswagen close to his heart. So, when Tracy Maxwell got in touch and asked him to build her the ultimate Volkswagen convertible, he shot down the Hebmüller rabbit hole quicker than you can say coachbuilt. ’57 OUTLAW GHIA The lowlight Karmann Ghia coupé is both a great looking car and also quite a rarity these days. The low-slung, swoopy bodywork looks sporty, but powered by the standard 1200cc motor from the Beetle, the accompanying drive is, to put it politely, slightly underwhelming. Consequently, as far back as the 1950s, several companies marketed tuning kits for the model to give it the pep its looks promised. Okrasa produced twin-port heads and big bore cylinder kits, and companies such as Judson and Shorrock came up some neat supercharger kits.
