Most car enthusiasts can recall a tale of ‘the one that got away’ and Leigh Hicks is no different. Except his story also has a sequel called “and then I bought it back again six years later,” which got us rather intrigued. The story, explains Leigh, starts in 2009 with a random search result on AutoTrader. “I was actually looking for a T4 at the time, but when I put ‘1.9TD Caravelle’ in the search engine, this ‘83 T25 with an AAZ diesel engine came up and I knew straight away that I had to have it. Needless to say, the family were dead impressed with the shiny new van-shaped addition to the Cushway fleet when it arrived. I was too embarrassed to mention it last issue but there was a slight mishap reversing on to the drive for the first time. Sod’s law, I managed to clip the driver’s side wing mirror – the gates are crazy narrow and the kids’ delight in seeing the van distracted me from making my usual scalpel sharp reversing manouevre. It didn’t shatter the mirror itself but the plastic cover’s scarred and I had to bend the whole thing back before it was able to fold again automatically. I am not making excuses but I blame the DSG. Ever fancied a winter trip in your Transporter? Well, we did – and a few days snowboarding in Scotland seemed like the dream activity. The drive from home (Chesterfield) to Glenshee Ski Centre was 350 miles so we broke up the six-and-a-half hour journey with a night in Dumbarton. Before leaving, we swapped our LV3 wheels back to our old LV1’s, just in case we had to use our snow chains. Luckily they never came out of the boot, our Continental AllSeasonContact tyres are winter rated and we had every confidence in them. For me, one of the most memorable road trips I embarked on last year was my visit to the Van Life Festival in Shrewsbury. I was asked to showcase my van in the inspiring Field of Dreams, coordinated by Levi, which was a massive privilege. My van was positioned right at the heart of the festival, surrounded by an eclectic mix of individuals from various backgrounds. It was truly incredible to relax and chat with such a diverse group of folk, all united by our shared passion for Van Life. Despite our differences, we connected effortlessly, which is a rare thing in today’s world. This being my second visit, I can confidently say it’s the finest festival on the circuit.
