Last February, when I began contemplating a braincentric story, I was more focused on packing for my annual pilgrimage to St. Barths than on my own mental state. But then all hell broke loose, and I found myself unable to focus at all. My perpetually mild case of monkey mind morphed into full-on quar-brain, and each time I sat down at my desk to write this piece, I would stare listlessly at my screen, or self-soothe by perusing real estate on Zillow. My creative reservoir was as dry as the artisanal baguette I baked during lockdown, my “flow” reduced to the depressing condensation outside my window. When W approached Cyndia Harvey to conjure up a project for the magazine, the London-based hairstylist was more than ready. “I had wanted to capture the essence of Black women for a long time, in a way that hadn’t been done before,” she says, adding that she was particularly inspired by the iconic paintings of the British artist Chris Ofili. “His work makes me so happy, because it celebrates the Black female body in a way that is quite seductive and poetic, but not objectified or sexualized. When it opened in October 1969 at what is now the Smithsonian American Art Museum, in Washington, D.C., the groundbreaking exhibition “Objects: USA” introduced American audiences to the studio craft movement. Organized by the farsighted New York art dealer Lee Nordness and Paul J. Last March, as New York City prepared for lockdown, the painter Julie Mehretu left her home in Harlem for a six-bedroom farmhouse known as Denniston Hill, which she now owns with friends. Her studio packed up a U-Haul with seven large canvases she had just begun working on, and she loaded her car with some food and clothes for herself and her kids—on spring break from third and ninth grades—and the family dog, Luna. Last year was nearly impossible for movies. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the world shut down, and the premiere of nearly every highly anticipated film was postponed—and then postponed again.
