Nature is a recurring theme in the work of Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren, of Swedish design studio Front. Reminded by childhood playtimes in the forest, the pair set out on a series of nature walks, photographing and scanning forest environments to gain a better understanding of its composition and living systems (see W*260). Working in collaboration with Moroso and Kvadrat Febrik, Lagerkvist and Lindgren then conceived the ‘Pebble Rubble’ collection, a seating group encompassing sofas, armchairs and stools, clad in ‘Arda’, a knitted fabric created by Front and Kvadrat Febrik. Italian film director Luca Guadagnino made his public debut as an interior designer at Milan Design Week in June with an installation centred around the fireplace. ‘By the Fire’ featured two living room scenes, inspired by the interiors of Carlo Scarpa, and was defined by a fireplace standing on opposite sides – one a stark presence in Ceppo di Grè stone, the other a colourful interpretation in ceramic, produced by porcelain brand Nymphenburg. Cristián Mohaded’s eye-catching elliptical totems, Francisco Jaramillo’s ‘Ibuju’ collection and Joe Colombo’s classic ‘Basket’ chair all stretch the boundaries of basketry. Mohaded uses handwoven simbol, a plant fibre from his home province of Catamarca, Argentina, and works with local craftspeople to create his towering sculptures, truly elevating this ancient craft. Meanwhile, Jaramillo focuses on the yaré vine, which grows in the Amazon and is being decimated along with the rainforest. The Colombian designer aims to showcase the vine’s strength and beauty with his ‘primitively composed’ ‘Ibuju’ seating. It’s hard to find a more elegant use of an electrical cable than in Guglielmo Poletti’s latest creation, a trio of table lamps for Flos. Minimal and effective, the lamps are held together by mechanical tension alone (no welds or screws needed), with the fabric cable securing the glass cylinder and aluminium handle. A balance of simplicity and strength underpinned the inaugural collection of Koyori, a new Japan-based furniture and lifestyle brand that debuted in June at Milan Design Week. Its five-piece launch collection, which includes three chairs by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and two by Danish-Italian design duo GamFratesi, filters Japanese aesthetics through the prism of borderless contemporary design, while maintaining a focus on sustainability. Inspired (both in design and name) by Le Corbusier’s holiday home on the Côte d’Azur, Rodolfo Dordoni’s ‘Cabanon’ sauna collection for Effegibi is an exercise in simplicity and functionality. Channelling the Finnish approach to saunas, their austere, sleek forms are imagined to be immersed in nature, and each is defined by minimalist wooden interiors and a corrugated aluminium shell, available in three subtle matte colours (moss, brick and concrete). Originally derived from the idea of the ornamental stepping stones found in Japanese gardens, Barber Osgerby’s ‘Tobi-Ishi’ table for B&B Italia got a makeover for its tenth birthday. First conceived in 2012 and marking the beginning of the London-based studio’s collaboration with the Italian contemporary furniture brand, the monolithic table has gone through a series of interpretations over the years, changing form and size, as well as material (including wood, cement and lacquer). To celebrate its 30th anniversary in style, MDF Italia picked four of its designs and dressed them up for the occasion. On display at the Aram store during the 2022 London Design Festival, the limited-edition collection shows the classic pieces – Piergiorgio and Michele Cazzaniga’s ‘Tense’ table, Bruno Fattorini’s ‘Minima’ bookcase, Xavier Lust’s ‘Le Banc’ bench and, pictured here, Piergiorgio’s ‘Lofty’ chair – in an entirely new light, thanks to a series of highly reflective hand-polished steel or aluminium finishes. All were selected for their airy, pared-back shapes, hence the name of the collection, ‘The Principle of Lightness’. To celebrate the effervescence that drives Moët & Chandon every day, the maison held a party at Parisian landmark, the Palais Brongniart, to mark the unveiling of 280 Grand Vintage 2004 jeroboams, bottles that Moët & Chandon cellar master, Benoit Gouez, had kept close watch over for nearly two decades. ‘Grand Vintage 2004 is a wine that embodies Moët & Chandon’s know-how,’ says Gouez. ‘Its elegant blend reflects a singular combination of maturity and complexity, representing the legacy of the maison’s 280-year history.’ For the party at the palace, which was built at the instigation of Napoleon Bonaparte, a regular visitor to Moët’s cellars himself, chefs Alexia Duchêne and Yann Couvreur worked with Gouez on a series of amuse-bouches, which had been specifically designed as a perfect taste match for…

A lot has happened in the year since we last caught up with Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis of Objects of Common Interest, our Designer of the Year 2022. The pair opened an 800 sq m manufacturing studio in their native Greece, the result of Romanian-born craftsman Ovidiu Colea donating the contents of his Long Island City manufacturing facility to the pair, as he retired from the business. Petaloti, Trampoukis and Colea had been collaborating for a few years; in 2017, the three of them created a collection of tableware titled ‘Relativity of Color’ (W*224). Few photographers have seen more through their lenses than Inez & Vinoodh. The duo’s distinctive, experimental practice has made them one of the most sought-after practitioners in the industry – operating, as Inez puts it, as ‘two brains, one person’. Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin met at the Fashion Academy in their hometown of Amsterdam, where they both studied fashion design. When Vinoodh commissioned Inez to shoot his first fashion collection in 1986, they realised the potential of their partnership, in work and life. ‘We both grew up in the same city, and have the same influences,’ they say via Zoom from their New York studio. ‘We did that first shoot together and we didn’t even need to talk, we just had the same feelings about everything.’ Their path…

One of our perennial favourites is by Hans Harald Rath, who, in 1952, created the ‘Alpha’ series for Viennese crystal specialist J & L Lobmeyr. Inspired by a copper beaker from the Middle Ages, it is made of crystal-blown muslin glass. Since launching in 2020 (and winning a Wallpaper* Design Award last year), Byredo Beauty has been at the forefront of producing a niche interpretation of beauty on a commercial scale. Originally created in collaboration with make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench, the brand is now embarking on an exciting new chapter under the guidance of former Chanel make-up and colour director Lucia Pica. 2022 was Cecilia Vicuña’s year. In April, the Chilean artist was honoured with the 59th Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement; she was the subject of a major show at New York’s Guggenheim; and in October, she unveiled Brain Forest Quipu, a majestic, two-sculpture installation in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Talking about the work, which draws on ecology, community, social justice and ancient South American communication systems, Vicuña says, ‘Even though it’s inside the museum, people take it differently, perhaps because it’s an industrial space. We like an occasional tale of the unexpected, when a designer chooses to mould something magical out of unorthodox materials. Tokyo-based design studio We+ repurposed styrofoam waste to create its dark, monolithic console, while French designer Roxane Lahidji and London studio Can both looked to marine life for inspiration – Lahidji mixed sea salt with tree resin for her organic-looking side tables, while Can’s ‘Liquid Geology’ table contrasts a steel enamel top with a base made from recycled car tyres and resin to replicate rugged ocean scenery. Artist Charlotte Kidger’s public installation in Swindon, made in collaboration with Mass Concrete, features construction waste and recycled TV screens, while modern découpeur David Horan’s fascination with paper led him to wrap a chair in layers and layers of Japanese washi.…

Swedish synth specialist Teenage Engineering splices exquisite product design with a thrillingly playful edge. Its cult following will only be enhanced by this latest and most eccentric offering. Its Choir is an eight-strong vocal ensemble, a set of unique wooden dolls containing a speaker and wireless connectivity to control their individual singing ‘voices’. Carlo, Leila, Miki, Ivana, Bogdan, Gisela, Hatshepsut and Olga each have a distinct synthetic voice, from bass to soprano. Their abstract forms reference eight countries, and there’s an inbuilt playlist of 22 choral works that be activated via movement or touch. You can combine up to 16 for a full performance and use a Midi keyboard to perform your own compositions. On its release in 1976, Girard-Perregaux’s original Casquette watch rethought traditional aesthetics with a futuristic LED display that offered an avant-garde antidote to the prevalent analogue dial. Only 8,200 examples were made over a two-year production period, making it popular with watch collectors, who later gave it its Casquette nickname. Girard-Perregaux has now formalised the moniker and reintroduced the cult timekeeper in a stronger, more functional iteration. Crafted from ceramic and titanium, its light, scratch-resistant form contains a quartz movement imbued with new features, including a secret element that lets the wearer choose a significant or sentimental date that can then be displayed at a specific time each day. girard-perregaux.com…

Many designers have elevated game sets to showcases of ingenuity and craftsmanship. But few have done so with as much whimsy and flair as brothers Nikolai and Simon Haas, whose second collection for New York homeware label L’Objet includes a chess set, tic-tac-toe set and one-minute timer. Individually sculpted brass pieces take centre stage: the chess king and queen are rotund characters with goofy smiles and crowns shaped like water splashes, the rooks look like cauldrons with legs, the pawns are shaped like mushrooms, while the tic-tac-toe pieces are frogs with exaggerated backsides. Designing Flag House was a welcome challenge for Studio MK27. The São Paulo-based practice is renowned for its well-honed, contemporary take on Brazilian modernism and the tropical villa typology – most of its work to-date has been in hot climes. To design a home in the frosty natural expanses of Whistler, the ski resort two hours north of Vancouver, was certainly a departure from its norm. ‘We arrived on site and it was all white with the last snow of the season,’ founder Marcio Kogan recalls of the team’s first site visit in 2012. ‘We started climbing the plot’s steep angle, through the snow, and we were warned by our hosts to follow in their footsteps. Long before Flamingo Estate became a cult Californian lifestyle brand, founder Richard Christiansen was installing beehives on his seven-acre estate in the LA hills. The son of Australian honey farmers, he describes making honey as ‘a beautiful thing that everyone can do’. Last November, Flamingo expanded its already impressive honey range with five limited-edition honeys. ‘We approached some of our heroes with a request: could we bring our beehives to them and harvest the tastes of their gardens?’ says Christiansen. Since his arrival at Montblanc in 2021, creative director Marco Tomasetta has focused on creating sleekly designed pieces that riff on the brand’s roots as a penmaker. Representing the pinnacle of the German label’s precision and craft, Montblanc’s writing implements are each marked with the number 4810, a reference to the height in metres of Mont Blanc, the Alpine peak from which it takes its name. A house emblem of sorts, the number now features in the name of a patented buckle closure found across the brand’s Extreme 3.0 collection, a series of hardy leather goods inspired by climbing equipment. Geneva-based high jewellery brand Boghossian is known for its audacious craftsmanship. It teases precious stones into invisible settings so they appear to hover magically over the skin, and lets gemstones, such as ultra-rare coloured diamonds, vivid rubies and mesmerising opals, take centre stage in designs that respect their quirks. Here, the natural curves of two dropped-shape conch pearls cut sensual silhouettes. When it comes to design, Julianne Moore’s voracious enthusiasm and genuine curiosity has honed her eye. Over the decades, not only has she acquired a spectacular design collection, but impressively, she has an intuitive understanding of how to put it all together. Rather than working with an interiors professional in the shadows, as many would do, the Academy Award-winning actor – known for films such as Still Alice, The Hours and Magnolia – has chosen to decorate all of her homes. Our annual ode to showstopping achievements and shining stars Having experimented with AI-aided art since 2015, British photographer Ben Millar Cole is enthusiastic about its potential to reconnect us with more creative, divergent thinking. ‘I can create an image of absolutely anything, in whatever style I want, in a matter of seconds,’ he says. ‘It’s consistently breathtaking.’ To create his images, Millar Cole uses the Midjourney platform, throwing it curveballs such as made-up words and strange prompts (‘applause from a piece of space’ or ‘introverted ikebana with bad hygiene’). This utilitarian take on the traditional cutlery set, designed by the late Virgil Abloh for Alessi, features lightweight, geometric forms and an aesthetic closer to that of work tools than table settings. Created in collaboration with Abloh’s London-based design studio Alaska Alaska, the set came to fruition after the polymathic designer approached the Italian homeware brand to suggest a collaboration. ‘Virgil thought of Alessi because of its design history and the calibre of the designers it has worked with in the past. This year’s bathroom essentials include Ceramica Cielo’s ‘Tiberio’, a freestanding lacquered cabinet with integrated ceramic washbasin available in an array of wood finishes and colours, as well as a series of matching mirrors. Italian outerwear label Herno began producing raincoats in 1948 when it discovered a way to make waterproof cotton using castor oil from old warplanes. Seven decades on, such innovations remain at the heart of Herno, whose Lake Maggiore headquarters have run on solar power since 2010. In 2019, it launched Herno Globe, an offshoot with a focus on pioneering low-impact fabrications. Herno Globe’s A/W22 collection featured various fabrics comprising regenerated nylon satin (crafted from recycled PET plastic bottles), local virgin and organic wools, and the innovative Fast5Degradable nylon, which takes just five years for anaerobic degradation. Hermès’ 2022 home collection was full of design gems, from architect Rafael Moneo’s oak chair to artist Carson Converse’s quilted cashmere bed cover. But if we really had to pick a favourite, then it would have to be Spanish artist and designer Tomás Alonso’s ‘Coulisse’ table lamp, inspired by the world of theatre and the backdrop panels that provide stage decoration. Like stage lights, all of the technical elements are simple and visible, but painted in black so as not to distract from what’s happening ‘on stage’, where colourful, Rothko-ish washi paper rectangles are stretched on a bamboo frame, and a thin copper-plated steel circle provides the illumination. Designer Madeleine Oltra and architect Angelo de Taisne won the Design Parade Toulon Grand Prix with this installation, an homage to childhood camping trips and 1970s camping gear. Composed of handcrafted polycarbonate sticks, the pieces in Jacopo Foggini’s‘A’mare’ collection appear as if made from shiny, solidified water, casting charming reflections on their surroundings, and give the illusion of disappearing if immersed in water. Designed for Italian furniture brand Edra, the outdoor collection, which comprises seating and tables in a translucent blue shade, pays tribute to the sea but is imagined for a variety of settings, from urban balconies to rural poolsides. A recent collaboration between London-based label Roksanda, known for its strong silhouettes and expansive use of colour, and Italian sportswear brand Fila proved to be a satisfyingly offbeat union. The collection offered up bold, voluminous forms, from duvet-like jackets to cosseting asymmetric quilted ponchos, in a vivid palette that included fluorescent shades of pink and orange. ‘This collection allowed me to merge my shapes and colours with a sense of performance and the outdoors,’ says Roksanda’s Serbian-born founder Roksanda Ilincic. ‘The soft, enveloping message is perfectly timely.’ roksanda.com, fila.com…

Rahul and Roshni Jhaveri, the co-founders of Mumbai jewellery brand Studio Renn, translate a preoccupation with transience into abstract pieces that play with traditional geometric forms. Sculptural brooches, reversible buttons and gemstone puffballs cut surprising silhouettes and breathe a freshness into conventional jewellery design. Here, ideas of atrophy take shape in a concrete ring, embedded with a brilliant-cut diamond. The piece, created in collaboration with local architecture firm Material Immaterial Studio, has been treated in an acid bath, and consequently will age with its wearer. ‘The process of creation takes centre stage,’ say the pair. ‘The jewellery is just a physical manifestation of that experimentation. A young gallery focusing on Latin American art and design, Unno made quite an entrance at Milan Design Week 2022 with its inaugural show. It took as its starting point one of the 2,000 paintings that form Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square (1950-1976), a series inspired in part by the pre-Columbian art that the German artist encountered during his many trips to Latin America. It took 13 years and almost £19bn to build and suffered myriad setbacks before finally opening to the public in May 2022, but for London commuters, the new Elizabeth line has fast become something of a transport game changer. It covers more than 100km and features 41 stations, including ten brand new ones. Nine different architecture studios, including Wilkinson Eyre, Hawkins Brown, and Allies and Morrison, were appointed to design the new stations, overseen by Grimshaw Architects to ensure a line-wide consistency. With larger, state-of-the-art trains, slashed journey times, and link-ups to other parts of the network, suddenly travelling into and around the capital opens up a world of time-saving, distance-shrinking, economy-expanding possibilities.
