Ceramic vessels, by Jacques Monneraud French artist Jacques Monneraud’s creations appear to be flimsy pieces of corrugated cardboard held together with bits of tape, but are, in fact, ceramic vessels that can hold water without any spills or soggy bottoms. Monneraud grew up in a family of artists and makers, and worked as a creative director for years, but only took up pottery five years ago. After a lot of experimenting with different clay mixes, he came across a texture perfectly resembling cardboard. Stands at Salone resembled not just furnished but fully inhabited midcentury houses in Palm Springs. Even the most innocuous dining table belied the simplicity of its form as the culmination of a five-year research project into repurposing waste material from an industrial process. BEST PAWS A teddy bear collaboration plays on our heartstrings When we heard that Raf Simons was collaborating with Kvadrat and Steiff on a teddy bear, we were all ears. The result did not disappoint, with the object combining the classically rigorous manufacturing skills of the German toy maker with the imaginative fabrics that Simons has been creating with the Danish textile brand since 2014. For this particular collaboration, Simons chose his ‘Asator’ fabric in Desert Sand, a 100 per cent cotton short pile velour that feels 100 per cent fit for purpose. The sleek fabric adds a discreet whimsicality to the traditional Steiff bear structure, and a Kvadrat/Raf Simons logo is emblazoned on a paw. What do you get a design-minded young woman for her 20th birthday? Well, if you’re Assaad Raphael, the founder of Porsche Centre Lebanon, the only gift that could possibly mark the occasion is a customised Porsche – reimagined by Milan studio David/Nicolas. JE ahn Je Ahn, Studio Weave, UK I recently completed my own home on the Isle of Wight. The budget was limited, but the project had an inherent sense of luxury in that I was in the unusual position of being my own client, so I could respond more nimbly and directly to project demands, such as the site’s conditions, market pricing and contractor capacity. It was a deeply personal project, where the closeness of the relationship between the makers and the architect-client (me and myself) meant that normal constraints, such as the realities of a moving-in deadline, didn’t have an effect on the project’s aims. Detroit looks different these days. Its grand but long-abandoned buildings – vestiges of a bygone era when the automobile was king – have been transformed into galleries and hotels. New glistening towers soar high above the historic skyline. Once blighted neighbourhoods have been redeveloped to keep existing residents while attracting new ones – 12,500 in 2024, according to US census data. There’s a sense of optimism here that’s hard to find anywhere else in the US. We like to honour our winners with a physical award, but who to help us create one? Milan-based design studio Formafantasma was the first name to spring to mind for its ability to encapsulate the creative zeitgeist. Founders Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, who were our Designers of the Year in 2021, proved to be the perfect collaborators, enthusiastically leaping on the challenge we set them: to create an expressive sculpture made of paper, to be received by this year’s winners in a flat-packed envelope and to be assembled by each honoree independently.
