George Shaw served with distinction for 28 years in the US Air Force, a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam war eras whose example inspired his daughter Linda to enlist in the Air Force and serve 22 years herself. As a military retiree, he served his fellow veterans at the Louis A Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia, putting in eight years as a mail room supervisor. It was a place he knew well, a place where he felt safe and found community, according to Linda, 58, and her mother, Norma, 80, George’s wife of 59 years. “We knew everybody there, knew the doctors, the nurses,” says Norma, “and he always got the very best of care.”
