THE NEW Te Ara Pataka Track, less than an hour’s drive from Christchurch is the latest addition to an amazing portfolio of outdoor experiences near the city. Several articles in Wilderness had piqued our curiosity. Normally we prefer more difficult missions into the backcountry, but after a series of mishaps we decided we needed a sure winner. After leaving a car at the Hilltop end of the track, we began our trip from one of Te Ara Pataka’s many tributaries. We had visited the Gebbie’s Pass end of the track many times before, and chose to start from Purau Saddle instead. FOR THOSE with dietary requirements, foods for tramping can be boring. At the end of a long day, you just want to pull out a good freeze-dried meal and eat. No fuss, just something tasty and nutritious that won’t play havoc with your gut. I have dairy-lactose and gluten allergies. After years of eating the same few freeze-dried meals, I am pretty bored. My girlfriend adheres to a FODMAP diet (avoids foods with fermentable, poorly absorbed short-chain carbs), which further limits our options. We need alternatives. DOC’s unsung heroes AT A TIME when DOC often comes under fire for its many alleged shortcomings, an unheralded success story has to be the composting toilets installed at Manson-Nicholls Memorial Hut at Lake Daniell in Lewis Pass Scenic Reserve. Let’s give a shout out for the hardworking, and unpaid, DOC earthworms slaving away in the dark confinement at the back of the toilet block of the (French-made) Ecodomeo dry composting toilet, one of the first of its kind in New Zealand. These diligent workers are transforming faecal matter and toilet paper into compost that only needs removing every five to 15 years. Voilà – no fuss, no mess, no smell! THE NEW ZEALAND falcon/karearea is one of only four native raptors left in New Zealand. (The others are harrier hawk, morepork and barn owl.) With an estimated 6000 to 8000 individuals, the falcon is classed as ‘nationally vulnerable’. The highest known density of karearea is found in Kaingaroa pine forest in the central North Island, though it is widely distributed on both main islands. That the birds have adapted to living in pine forest shows just how comfortable they are living in a wide variety of habitats, including from the coast to above the tree line, in podocarp and beech forests, on tussock lands and even roughly grazed hill country. Unless you plan your tramping holidays half a year in advance, it’s unlikely you’ll get a booking in any of the iconic Great Walk huts over long summer weekends. Fortunately, for those of us who prefer spontaneity, there are alternatives. When one of my dearest friends from Canada, Robyn, said she was coming to New Zealand for a visit, she suggested we try out the Greenstone-Caples loop. Robyn’s no stranger to the world of tramping. I’LL ADMIT to being a bit sceptical when I received Salewa’s Crow GTX ultra-light summer-mountaineering boots. Weighing in at 1220g/ pair, the Crows were not only significantly lighter than any three-four season boot I’d worn before, but were altogether more streamlined. With their petite profile and black and papavero colour scheme, they look more like a street shoe than a fully-fledged transalpine boot. But any misgivings I had were dispelled during a month of travel through the central Southern Alps over braided river valleys, steep tussock, snow, loose scree and solid rock. The full-wrap rubber rand provides good protection from sharp rocks, and the suede leather and ‘abrasion-resistant fabric’ upper held up well. Last Christmas Eve, we climbed The Footstool in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. Conditions were perfect and the splendid morning view included majestic Aoraki/Mt Cook as well as neighbouring Mt Sefton. Be ready The key to getting a good shot of someone tramping is being ready to capture those candid moments. This means having your camera easily accessible to capture the moment without stopping. Frame the background Rather than capture a closeup of a person hiking, you should also include some of the landscape around them. That will give a sense of place and tell the story of where you are tramping. Capture some movement Great shots of people in the outdoors depends on framing and positioning. In the 2013-2014 season, about 5000 people walked it, passing from the beech-lined forest on the edge of Lake Rotoiti and up the avalanche-torn Travers Valley. In the 1960s, a small act of defiance saved what is likely the last remaining podocarp forest on the east coast of the South Island.
