FOR DONNA MILLAR, walking and tramping are four-season pursuits – in part, as she says, because “in the Otago and Canterbury regions, we can't always wait for perfect weather”.
Her solution is a combination of research, merino layers, a PLB, wet-weather gear, spare gas and food and a plan B.
“If you have the right clothing and gear, it's safe and enjoyable,” Donna says. “Although I don't let general rain, cold temperatures and wind deter me, I don't take risks.
“My kids and I have tramped in rain, snow and some wind – safely, but it's unpleasant for those who are not prepared. During less-than-perfect weather (especially winter), tracks and huts are quieter and it's a more peaceful trip with real quality time.”
