MOST people do not know that Kangaroo Island, which covers some 4500 square kilometres, was discovered in 1803 by explorer Mathew Flinders. It was the original site for the colony of South Australia when it was settled at Kingscote in 1836 by staff of the South Australia Company, that is, free men not convicts. It is officially recognised as the first official European settlement in South Australia.
The colony was later relocated to Adelaide within the space of three to four years due to the lack of available drinking water on the island.
