Beth Barrett-Wild, the ECB’s director of the women’s professional game, has urged patience with the new domestic structure, stressing that attracting increased audiences “won’t happen overnight”. The overhaul, known as ‘Project Darwin’, will see counties given back control over the women’s domestic game. Eight fully professional Tier One sides will take over from the previously existing regions from 2025, with Yorkshire and Glamorgan joining in 2026 and 2027 respectively. Below that will be Tier Two and Tier Three sides - a mixture of semi-professional and amateur teams overseen by counties. No.8 The Duke of Dorset In the 18th century there were a few aristocrats who were obsessed with cricket. Among the best known were Horace Mann, the Earl of Tankerville and the Duke of Dorset. They each bankrolled teams, and often hired good cricketers to be gardeners or gamekeepers, so they were always available to play. Games were played for enormous stakes, sometimes thousands of pounds. The Duke of Dorset leased the cricket ground at Sevenoaks Vine to the town for a peppercorn rent, and the yearly rent is still two peppercorns and a cricket ball. For all the shocks and drama, the recent Women’s T20 World Cup was not an exhibition in free-flowing batting. Turgid pitches and sluggish outfields in the UAE - employed as emergency hosts after Bangladesh was deemed unsafe led to a tournament dominated by slow bowlers.
