Miter gauges are one of those accessories that are easy to accumulate. Your table saw likely came with one, and there’s plenty of woodworkers who choose to upgrade their gauges down the road — which means secondhand gauges aren’t too difficult to come by. Either way, a good miter gauge is an integral part of the table saw. STOCK VS COMMERCIAL. A miter gauge is a standard feature of most table saws, but those stock gauges leave a lot to be desired. GAME In most board games, the pieces promenade around the table following a predictable path. Crokinole, a game from eastern Canada and New England, offers more dynamic game play. SHOP Carving tools have been creeping into my tool cabinet for the last few years. They’ve invaded the chisel drawer and commandeered the router odds and ends drawer. One of the delights of carving is that you can practice almost anywhere. For that to work, you need a way to transport the tools. That’s the origin story for this box. It’s small enough to tuck in with the luggage for a vacation. It also protects keen edges within a larger case. It contains a divided tray above an open compartment. WOODWORKINGTechnique Just a few issues ago, Rob wrote an article about cutting dovetails by hand. So another article may seem surprising ... or redundant. However, the carving box on page 42 incorporates hand-cut dovetails. In that sense, a refresher seems appropriate. I’ve learned that when a project calls for thin, small parts, the dovetail-cutting process deviates enough from the “standard method” to almost be a different technique. ALLAbout When I was a kid the only glue I remember seeing was a white bottle that had an orange label and the bust of a happy cow on the front. Various sizes of that bottle were everywhere — small ones in the craft room at school, and big beat up ones in my grandfather’s shop. DESIGNER Remember back as a kid you could get a collector’s card (along with some stale bubble gum) that when tilted to the left you’d see the Joker, and when tilted to the right Batman would appear? The wizardry behind that is know as the “lenticular” effect, more commonly called the flip effect. The style of this hall table flips between Art Deco, Mid-century, and if you made the piece multi-colored it would work in Pee Wee’s Playhouse. When I need a circle, I turn to my hand-held router and a good trammel jig. I’ve made my share of one-off jigs only to throw them away between uses. RULING CIRCLES. For my last project, I invested some time (not that much, frankly) and materials to make a circle-cutting jig that works better. The main components are shown in the drawing at left.
