The game that settled the 2019-20 Premier League title was a microcosm of the season. Manchester City played some extraordinary possession football. They moved the ball around in mesmerising patterns. At times, particularly in the opening quarter of the game, there was a sense of greatness about them, such that the thought Liverpool had a lead of more than 20 points felt vaguely incredible. Most teams prepare for a new season by working on their fitness and fine tuning in friendlies. Ukraine’s most decorated side Dynamo Kiev–15 times national champions since independence in 1991 – are currently trying a different approach, fomenting their very own backyard civil war. For only the second time since 1985, Turkey has a league champion from outside the “Big Three” of Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray. Unlike Bursaspor’s surprise success in 2009-10, this is more than a one-off. Istanbul Basaksehir are genuine game-changers in Turkey. Istanbul is a divided city. For large parts of the last Premier League season, it seemed certain that the “Big Six’s” vice-like grip on the Champions League places was to end. Leicester City were flying high and offering the closest challenge to the top two; Wolverhampton Wanderers were building on their impressive debut season; new boys Sheffield United were breathing down everybody’s neck.
