The group phase of this season’s African Champions League starts in February, once the Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon are completed, but the 16-team field was settled in mid-November.
When the draw takes place, just before Christmas, there will be plenty of pedigree, with eight former winners involved, as well as three rookie clubs. Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Sudan and Tunisia all have two representatives, emphasising the strength of their respective leagues and, at the same time highlighting how west Africa has been hit badly by the mass exodus of playing talent to every corner of the globe.
