The storm rolled in with 45-50 knot winds and large waves smashing directly into the breakwater at Slovenia’s Piran Harbour and reaching the stern of Willow, showering our new Hanse 455 with spray. My son Alfie, 11, and I stayed in the cockpit for a real drenching and a break from the July heat, while my wife, Anna, and our one-year-old, Charlie, took shelter down below. In the UK, Anna and I mainly sail on the East Coast, and we’ve previously owned a Hanse 411 called GiGi, which we based at Gouvia in Corfu.
