When Jon Hall begins to draw a design for a customer, he is usually at the drafting table with traditional tools. Hall joined Huckins Yacht in 1980 after beginning his training at the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, where so many have entered the profession, and then learned about design stability by helping to pen shrimp boats for a company in Jacksonville, Florida. Huckins’ yachts are laid up over a male mold created with precision frames from Marine Concepts. Inner layers of the hull are hand-laminated to the mold using vinylester resin and layers of multidirectional fiberglass cloth. Corecell structural foam of engineering-specific densities is then vacuum-bagged to the layup, followed by the outer layers. When the hull is removed from the mold, all surfaces are handfaired. OUR DRONE RAN HARD toward the Viking 62 Convertible. As it captured video of our sea trial, its blades whirred and spun at a blistering pace over the azure waters of Miami Beach. The flying video camera struggled mightily as the big sport- fisherman came up on plane and her twin 1,925- horsepower Caterpillar C32A diesel turbos spooled up. It wasn’t long before Yachting’s managing editor, Jake Lamb, had to retrieve the drone so we could really see what this blue-water beast could do (and so that our mini helicopter didn’t drop into the drink). THE FIRST time I saw a Garlington 61, I was mesmerized. She looked graceful, with a clean, fluid sheer line and a teak toe rail. I knew she was custom and figured she was from the pedigree of cold-molded, custom battlewagons that occupy a place of reverence among hard-core fishermen. What I didn’t realize was how far the 61’s construction had progressed from the traditional to the cutting edge. Richard Garlington’s eponymous yard’s cold-molded 48- and 58-foot boats captured boaters’ attention in the late 1980s with sleek design and fish-raising abilities. In 1993, Peter and Everett Landeweer bought the company (Garlington stayed on as an advisor and died in 2003). Bravo yachts, in its marketing materials, says it aims to build boats that are brave, bold, high-quality and different. With the Bravo B36, the builder has achieved its goals. Most unusual is that Bravo lets buyers design the cockpit from scratch. All cockpit components — galley, dinette, settee — are aluminum, so they can be tailored to individual desires. The Bravo B36 is built in Poland, which has some of the finest ship welders in the world. Their skill is evident in the flawless workmanship on the Bravo B36. When I boarded, I thought the cockpit furniture was molded fiberglass. WHEN I stepped across the teak deck and poked my head into the Horizon Yachts E84 salon, the space looked like it stretched to infinity. The builder created great flow from the cockpit to the forward galley and dinette. It is unobstructed, brightly lit and warm. House-length and wide windows add to the voluminous feel. Speaking of windows, check out that subtle H-shaped hullside window flanking the amidships master. The E84 fits into the upper end of the builder’s E series, which stretches from 56 feet to 88 feet in length. THERE’S A special berth in Davy Jones’ marina for people who unload their waste tanks near their fellow mariners. Sure, most of us have had a boat crisis that resulted in something environmentally nasty. Things go over the side. Goop goes into the bilge, to be pumped into the sea later on. I get it. Stuff happens. But emptying your tanks near humans is the demarcation line between dumb and dastardly. It has always surprised me how casual some people are about this. I have had boaters and maintenance techs alike suggest to me that it’s just fine to jettison waste into the harbor. Why?
