LOA 70'1" MAX BEAM 17'5" AZIMUT YACHTS HAS increasingly employed carbon fiber in strategic areas on its yachts, and for good reason: The material offers stiffness and strength with reduced weight versus fiberglass, while enhancing interior volume and on-the-water performance. Simply put, less material is required to achieve the same result. Case in point: the Azimut S7. This 70-footer fills the gap between the builder’s 55S and 77S. She has a carbon-fiber superstructure and radar arch, removing weight aloft. Reducing the heft should lower the center of gravity, enhancing her ride in a seaway and her speed when conditions let you put the throttles on the pins. I ran the 30 in Sarasota, Florida, with company Chairman Stephen Julius and President Steve Heese, who explained the design process behind the many small details that make this Chris- Craft’s concept unusually thoughtful. The hardtop, for instance, matches both the soft curves of the Catalina’s hull and the interior design of the bow. DUAL-RANGE RADARS Garmin’s newest generation, openarray radars have more power and range than their predecessors. These radars are compatible with Garmin multifunction devices and come in two models: the 4-foot GMR 2524 xHD2 ($8,199) and the 6-foot GMR 2526 xHD2 ($8,999). Each has 25 kW of transmit power and delivers a maximum range of 96 nautical miles. Additionally, each radar has a dual-range mode, allowing users to seek nearby targets on one screen while scanning for far-off storms on another. CLASSIC CRAFT FOR THE AVID YACHTSMAN LOA 61'1" MAX BEAM 18'2" FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, I fished aboard a Viking 61 Convertible off Costa Rica. Several 61Cs were in the marina, and I soon found out why. For two days, we backed down on, chased and caught countless sailfish, plus a blue marlin. We didn’t miss a fish. The boat had an uncanny ability to put the squeeze on pelagics in a flash. YEAR AFTER YEAR, the docks in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, are lined with more than 1,000 boats for the city’s fall boat show. But they haven’t always been. Like most success stories, this one has been a journey. ¶ In 1959, only 13 exhibitors assembled at Fort Lauderdale’s War Memorial Auditorium for the first show. But 17 years later, Kay Pearson of Show Management took over and implemented some monumental changes. The exhibition was renamed the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), shift- ed to the fall (when builders released new-year models) and moved to a new location, the Bahia Mar Resort and Yachting Center. That 1976 show hosted 103 exhibitors. ¶ FLIBS continued to evolve and Yachting, having attended the show since its early days, was there to see it.…

SEAKEEPER USUALLY unveils new stabilizer models for yachts that previous models don’t cover. The Seakeeper 6 is different in that respect; it’s for 40- to 49-foot hulls, the same as the Seakeeper 5, but with upgrades. ¶ “Though the Seakeeper 6 offers 20 percent more stabilizing force than the Seakeeper 5, it takes up less space and is more efficient in terms of weight, power draw and cost,” says COO Andrew Semprevivo. ¶ It also works faster. The owner of the first Benetti Mediterraneo 116 christened her Oli, his wife’s nickname. The moniker is warm, friendly and has a simple elegance. It’s a perfect match for this yacht. Moving to Benetti from another brand, the owner wanted a 100-plus-footer that was casual but graceful, a “play palace” with a style that would accommodate his large family. LOA 65' CRUISE SPEED 40 KNOTS LONDON-BASED design firm Claydon Reeves’ Aeroboat S6 takes a fresh approach to day-boating, borrowing elements from iconic British warbirds like the Supermarine Spitfire. While the 65-foot concept yacht has many noteworthy features, its coolest by far is the stern “tail” area. A retractable passerelle, hidden in a compartment, deploys upward and outward for safe entry into the cockpit. “Pop-up handrails on both sides of the passerelle form a level ‘catwalk’ that is wider than usual,” notes Andrew Johansson, sales and business development manager for Claydon Reeves. The passerelle also combines with the S6’s Aerostairs, arguably the most convertible swim platform I’ve seen on a day yacht.
