PALM BEACH HAS MADE A name for itself building smooth-riding, efficiently designed, Downeast-style cruisers that can tackle a seaway. But until now, the company had skewed toward tradition, with classic lines and speeds that, while running in the jaunty 30-knot range, were not necessarily making eyeballs pop. ¶ That changes this month at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where Palm Beach plans to debut its GT50 Express, the first in its sport-boat-inspired GT series (a GT50 Open is scheduled to debut this winter in Germany). ¶ The GT50, with a fluid, flowing profile, reportedly tops out at 42 knots thanks, in part, to twin 600 hp Volvo Penta IPS800s. VOLVO PENTA WANTS TO lower stress levels when docking by using sensors, processors and Inboard Performance System (IPS) drives to guide a yacht autonomously into or alongside a berth — by the year 2020. ¶ To self-dock, a yacht needs to know its precise location and the berth’s exact position, shape and size. Volvo Penta accomplishes this by using five sensors: four ashore and one on board. ¶ “The sensors on the dock know the [docking] details and communicate with the boat,” says Anders Thorin, Volvo Penta’s marine electronics manager. ¶ The technology operates as a networked function on the IPS’ controller area network. DANIEL GOHSTAND got the idea in Guatemala. A documentary photographer, he’d been shooting images in what he calls a little town on the side of a volcano. To give back to the community, he strung up a 30-foot projection screen and put on a show. ¶ It was a windy night, and the screen billowed. ONE OF THE FEW SILVER LININGS that came with the devastating hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria last year was the way that charter yachts rediscovered St. Vincent and the Grenadines, in the southern Caribbean. Traditionally, the hub of crewed charter activity has been up north, but as marinas there worked to rebuild, captains and charter brokers looked for alternatives. THEY SAY THAT SAILORS had boat shoes all to themselves from about 1935 to the 1970s. The original pair, in a misguided feat of styling over function, had black soles that stained the teak decks of every boat they touched — but they helped keep crewmen upright on wet side decks, so the design idea stuck. The first Custom Line 120, Vista Blue, is a water toy on steroids. Milan-based yacht designer Francesco Paszkowski’s first effort with the Ferretti Group brings the outside inside. Sole-to-overhead windows surround the salon for sweeping ocean views, although the scene stealers are the sliding doors leading to the cockpit. Closed, the two-piece, electrically operated doors have an airy appeal, but the entire bulkhead (including the door frame) hinges up into a recess in the cockpit overhang. The system was developed with an aerospace company, and it results in a seamless transition from the transom all the way to the 10-seat formal dining area forward of the salon.
