The 140 will be the first Pershing ever built at the Ferretti Group’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy, which specializes in steel and aluminum motoryachts starting at 131 feet length overall. While the location of the build will be new, the brand DNA will remain thanks to designer Fulvio De Simoni, who has penned all Pershing lines since 1985. WHEN I STOOD ON the aft deck of the Arcadia Yachts’ 85 last fall and heard the bui lder’s executive team talk about this new vessel called the Sherpa, I couldn’t help but admire them. Here was a group of lifelong yachtbuilders dreaming up and constructing a truly different type of craft. This is a yacht that is varied in style and function. STEVE RYDER has spent 28 years working for Pennsylvania-based Bellingham Marine, which, after 60 years in business, touts itself as being the largest dock-building company in the world. Ryder and his colleagues have seen a lot of marinas — but never anything like what they’re building for the 2016 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show. Most boat shows are staged at marinas with existing concrete docks. “The unique thing with the Miami boat show location is that there’s nothing there,” Ryder says. “It has to be completely built for this one single purpose.” The National Marine Manufacturers Association insisted that the new docks be built environmentally friendly, avoiding using temporary docks that could break apart and become floating garbage. ON NOVEMBER 30, 2015, Victor Mooney completed a 5,000-mile transatlantic row from an island off the coast of Africa to the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. On that day, Mooney joined a growing list of adventurers who have made long-range, solo trips in small craft. In fact, solo voyages were so popular in the 1960s that Yachting’s February 1966 issue highlighted several adventurers who either were making or had recently completed long-distance passages. I NOTICED her as I approached a bridge on the Intracoastal Waterway. She was a 60-foot, Eurostyle express outfitted with all the trimmings. I was confused — not by her 1970s earth-tone finish or picture windows, but by her skipper jockeying about. I thought she was waiting for a bridge opening until she began wafting sideways toward a marina. Was she a NUC? NUC, or “not under command” in the language of the lubberly, is a vessel unable to maneuver as required because of exceptional circumstances. I could see tidal wavelike pulses washing from the boat’s propellers and thrusters. She had plenty of power. Yup, she was a NUC alright, but only because new technology was in command — or not! WHAT IS IT THAT SOME yacht designers and builders don’t understand about berths — or, as landlubbers call them, beds? Not long ago, a friend showed me his new 50-something footer. I ooohed and aaahed through the yacht — until we got to the master stateroom. There, I laughed out loud. “You’ve got to be kidding,” I said. The builder had created a berth that angled out from one corner diagonally. Aside from thinking it was a silly layout on a boat this size, I was amused by the shape of the bed. “How many sides does this bed have?” I asked my friend. “Hey, look how big it is,” he hedged. WHEN IT COMES TO Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, the population of 298 doesn’t quite seem to match the island’s 13 beach bars.
