The Vicem 65 Classic Flybridge is a Down East-style boat with a reported maximum speed of 32 knots. The builder says the light-blue hull color in the photograph below is proving popular, though owners can choose whatever color they wish. Accommodations include an amidships master stateroom with a king-size berth and a forepeak stateroom for guests. The aluminum design is described as a hybrid between a chase boat and a performance cruiser, with reported 40-knot speed and a customizable platform for one-off orders. When I first saw it the day before, the boat was tied to an outer pontoon at the Cannes Yachting Festival with a kayak and an electric mountain bike strapped to the coachroof rack, unwashed salt glistening in the early autumn sunshine. CALL IT A FIRST-WORLD problem, but rain can cause performance issues for some satellite-communication frequencies. This isn’t because onboard satcom equipment is faulty or inadequate—it’s not. Rather, certain bands of radio-frequency energy physically attenuate as they travel through precipitation-streaked time and space. ¶ Fortunately, not all satcom frequencies suffer from rain-fade issues, and hardware—including Intellian’s recently unveiled FB500 terminal—already exists to help leverage this bandwidth. ¶ Supporting Intellian’s hardware is Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband (FBB) service, which delivers a near-global (99.9 percent availability) rain-fade-free service by harnessing the lower-frequency L-band (1 to 2 GHz) range.
