Previous NSS displays had been around for years, but the evo3 set a new standard for Simrad’s fish-finding and chart-plotting capabilities. SANLORENZO GROUP EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN MASSIMO PEROTTI IS, AND HAS ALWAYS HAS BEEN, AN EARLY adopter of cleaner technology. ¶ He recently pushed Sanlorenzo’s Bluegame brand to partner with two America’s Cup syndicates to develop the BGH-HSV, the first zero-emissions chase boat. It has speeds up to 50 knots and a range of 150 nautical miles using only hydrogen fuel cells. FRANS HEESEN WAS IN HIS 30S when he bought Striker Boats in the Dutch city of Oss. The year was 1978, and Heesen’s background wasn’t in ship-building. He came from high-tech plastics, and oh, did he have ideas. ¶ For the next decade, Heesen worked to establish his brand, and then, in 1988, everything changed. That’s the year Heesen Yachts launched Octopussy, a 143-footer built for John Staluppi that topped out at just over 53 knots. XEAMOS’ ZERO-NOX selective catalytic reduction systems for 700- to 2,000-kilowatt diesels convert toxic nitrous oxides in the exhaust into nontoxic nitrogen and water using an airless urea treatment. The systems—designed for yachts from 100 to 165 feet length overall—enable marine diesel engines to comply with the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emissions standards. This allows yachts access to sensitive areas including American and Canadian seaboards, the Baltics, the Caribbean Sea and high-latitude waters. ¶ Daniel van Drunen, Xeamos’ sales manager, says the main challenge was developing a way to vaporize the urea that didn’t require a large air compressor.
