Do you love to try new horsey activities with your friends? Pony Club offers a variety of options you won’t find elsewhere, including both mounted and unmounted skills. Pony Club can teach you a lot. Ella Swales, 16, says that through Pony Club she’s learned to present herself and her horse well, to arrive early for everything, and that putting in hard work pays off. It’s almost that time of year again: The days are getting chillier and shorter. Pretty soon, the sun will be setting by the time you get to the barn after school. It’s easy enough to put on or take off your jacket, but your horse will be wearing a fluffy winter coat full-time. If you ride actively throughout the winter and your horse gets sweaty in his winter fur, you may want to consider body clipping to help him cool out and dry faster after your rides. STENCIL: Create your own with a piece of cardstock (or a flattened out cereal box), a plastic file folder, or foam. It’s usually easiest to doodle a design on the paper first and then cut it out carefully. You can also buy pre-made stencils if you find one that suits your horse. CHALK: If you don’t want to use a stencil, you can mark out your lines with chalk. This will help make sure your lines are straight before turning on the clippers. 1) Make sure your horse is clean before starting to clip, or your blades will wear out faster and you’ll get lots of clipper “tracks.” 2) Dress appropriately. It’s impossible to clip a horse without getting showered in tiny hairs. Wear something like a nylon track suit that will repel the prickly pieces, plus boots for safety. 3) Give yourself lots of time. You don’t want to be rushed; clipping always seems to take longer than you think it will. There’s a way to combine your favorite place, the barn, with your school life: Personalize your notebook and decorate the inside of your locker to bring your two worlds together. Many Thoroughbreds are sensitive to all cues on the ground and under saddle. A young rider should always be aware that any movement will be picked up by the horse. What does my horse see? QUESTION: Can horses see in color? If so, how many shades and colors can they see? Also, can horses see better at night than during the day? — Megan ANSWER: Horses can see in color, although not to the extent that humans can. Horses cannot see reds, but can see washed-out versions of yellows, greens and blues. The retina, a thin, cell-containing structure found at the back of the eye, contains a special type of cell necessary for color vision. These are called cone cells. Horses have two different types of cone cells, while humans have at least three. Don’t worry: There’s a way to get him back on track. Why Horses Act Up Sometimes your horse isn’t just being naughty. First, make sure he’s not sore and that your saddle and bridle fit correctly.
