I had my very first riding lessons with the Girl Scouts. My parents didn’t know much about horses or riding, but they were very involved with scouting. Once I got started with horses, there was no stopping me! The Girl Scout motto is “be prepared.” I think that’s a good motto to have with horses, too. This issue of Young Rider has plenty of tips to help you be prepared, including learning to ride the gallop, what to do if your horse bucks (yikes!), and how to take care of your horse in winter weather. Brrrr! Winter is on the way. Horses have some special needs when the temperatures drop and snow starts to fall. Here’s what you need to know to take care of your horse or pony in winter weather. Keeping Warm Your horse’s woolly winter coat is designed to keep him toasty in cold weather. The long fluffy hairs stand up and trap warm air against his skin. Most healthy horses stay warm if they grow a nice thick coat of hair and have shelter from wind and rain. Shelter can be a three-sided run-in shed, stable or even a group of trees. HOLLY After recently moving to Southern California, Artie and I really have no cold weather to worry about in the winter. Last year I gave him a trace clip, and he never even needed a blanket! (But I have some just in case.) My favorite article this month is on mastering your gallop position. Artie LOVES to gallop, so it’s super important that I keep him under control and that he listens to my cues. Then we can have a blast! Bucking can be scary. You’re riding along and all of a sudden your horse drops his head, evading contact with the bit. He stiffens his front legs and pushes off with his hind legs, launching his hindquarters into the air. Some horses do nothing more than “crow hop,” where the hind feet don’t leave the ground more than a few inches. Other horses, however, can get a lot of momentum going behind their bucks. No matter how big the buck, the movement can be intimidating, throwing you off balance and possibly even causing you to fall off. AIDAN, 12, has been riding dressage for two-thirds of his life. He began taking lessons when he was 4 and currently rides at Skip Ahead Dressage in New Jersey. Last year, Aidan leased his first horse, an Arabian named Mt. Adams. He currently competes a rescued horse named Brilliant Disguise (“Rico”).
