Equitation on the flat is a chance for you to show the judge just how effectively you ride. The goal of the class is to use invisible aids to show off all three of your horse’s gaits, in both directions of the ring. In addition to invisible aids, the judge is looking at your position when you ride, as well as how well both you and your horse are presented, so make sure you and your steed are neat, tidy and clean! Every horse we ride teaches us something different. Ryan Hall, 17, has one equine in particular that has taught her tons: donkey named Kit Kat. Ryan got KitKat as a companion for her old gelding. She was semi-wild and wouldn’t come within a few feet of humans. Ryan spent lots of time gaining her trust before trying to ride her. Anna went to her first show since leadline in 2011! She told us that she learned the value of group lessons because it helped her prepare for the show environment. ANSWER: Burrs tangled in your horse’s mane, tail and forelock can be a challenge to unsnarl. Staying on top of the problem is essential to keep it from getting out of control. Once burrs become deeply embedded, it can be nearly impossible to remove them without cutting or pulling out hair. Apply silicone-based coat polish spray or detangling serum directly to the burrs. Let it sit for a while to soak in and soften them a bit. Then work on removing the burrs from the slippery strands. Wear gloves to protect your hands if necessary—burrs can be sharp!
