I’ve been riding all my life and can’t give it up now SALLYANNE HAIGH’S life changed at an event with the Severn Vale Riding Group in 2015. Throughout the winter, most horse owners have to tackle the task of clipping, leaving a mountain of horse hair to be disposed. But Hartpury College teamed up with Gloucestershire plasters, Stroud Lime Plastering Services, to use the clipped hair from 50 college horses in a historic plastering technique. Find it, fix it! Solve common schooling problems with advice from Paul Hayler FIND THE PROBLEM If you’re unsure whether you’re working your horse in the correct outline, consider where his head is. If he’s poking his nose out, you’ll have little contact with his mouth and his ears will appear much higher than the crest of his neck (see picture below). The condition Equine polysaccharide storage myopathy type 1 (better known as PSSM1) is a genetic condition that causes tying up (muscle cramps) and muscle damage in horses. It’s the result of a mutation in the GYS1 gene, causing too much glycogen (the storage form of sugar) and an abnormal type of polysaccharide (a form of carbohydrate) to be made and stored in the horse’s body. It affects around 30 breeds and in the UK is most common among cobs, Quarterhorses and draught breeds. Signs of the condition generally appear in young horses when they’re first brought into work, but it’s also often diagnosed in horses over the age of seven who’ve been known to struggle with gait abnormalities. I needed the boost that seeing the horses gave me PIP RUSSELL was practising Polocrosse in August 2006 when disaster struck. “My mare slipped and we both fell. My head took the full impact” says Pip.
