LET’S FACE IT, looking after horses in the winter is tough. Freezing temperatures, limited daylight hours and mud galore can make even the simplest tasks a challenge, but with a little forethought and planning, you can ease the burden.
WATCH THE FORAGE AND FLUID INTAKE
With limited grass available in paddocks, horses will need additional forage to get them through the winter months.
“It is really important to provide enough forage to help satisfy the behavioural needs of your horse, especially during winter when grass may not be readily available,” says Oonagh Meyer, head of operations approved centres at the British Horse Society (BHS). “Be sure to provide additional forage if this is the case.”
