Vets have seen a spike in cases of horses requiring urgent veterinary intervention this autumn after they have eaten toxic tree seeds. It has prompted the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) to put out a warning to owners to ensure that their horses are kept safe from the seasonal risks of grazing around oak and sycamore trees. Seeds from the common sycamore tree produce the toxin hypoglycin A, and these can be present in high concentrations in seedlings. When horses eat these, either by accident or because they are lacking other forage options, some will develop severe and often fatal muscle damage, called atypical myopathy, whose signs may be muscle soreness and/or trembling, stiffness, weakness, lethargy, breathing difficulties, colic symptoms and brown or dark red urine.
