Q It seems like my hair won’t grow past a certain length. Is that possible?
A: Crazy, but true: Strands don’t just grow endlessly from the day we’re born. Everyone’s hair has a biologically set growth phase of between three and 10 years, and this, plus the care you take, determines hair’s maximum length, says hair research scientist Thomas L. Dawson, Ph.D. The cycle starts anew when a hair falls out. You can’t increase your hair’s growth phase, but you can help strands reach their greatest lengths by minimizing breakage: Our Lab director and chemical engineer, Birnur Aral, Ph.D., suggests conditioning every time you shampoo to form a protective layer, brushing gently and avoiding chemical treatments (color, bleach, straightening) and heat (blowdryers, hair irons) whenever possible.
