I know, I know — November’s typically the month we talk about thankfulness. But in Canada, where I grew up, Turkey Day is the second Monday in October. I get to celebrate one of my favorite holidays twice! Obviously, key perks for me are the bird…the cranberries…the mashed potatoes…the gravy(!)…the pumpkin pie…with whip — all times two. And as someone who grew up giving thanks at every meal, I also find it a wonderful reminder to take stock in a bigger way and appreciate the here and now. Eleven-year-old Marley Dias is proof that you can’t judge a book by its cover. While she may look like your average middle schooler, last fall Marley started a successful social-action campaign, #1000blackgirlbooks, to raise awareness about the lack of African-American girls in children’s literature. “I was sick of books about white boys and their dogs,” she says. Her concerns are well-founded; the Cooperative Children’s Book Center reports that out of 3,400 kids’ books published in 2015, only 269 focused on black characters.
