VOLUMNIA THE MEMORY OF THINGS Running until 17 February is “La memoria delle cose”, a solo show by painter Alfredo Casali curated by Massimo Ferrari in the former church of Sant’Agostino in Piacenza. Since 2018 the building has hosted Volumnia, an exhibition venue for art and innovative historical design by Enrica De Micheli. About a hundred works, comprising familiar landscapes, slates, faces, tables and houses, archetypes recurrent in works by the philosopher-mathematician-visual poet from Piacenza devoted to often monochrome pictorial-material expression, are enclosed in opaque black micro-architectures (made from panels by Saib). Stack arose from the encounter between the Friulian company Midj and two young emerging designers Enrico Martini and Dimitri Dall’Agnol. The chair is the perfect interpretation of the company motto “Design is a wonderful life”, which guides the research and development of new products in the R&D department of the Officina delle Idee. The chair’s onomatopoeic name is inspired by the noise produced by the simple system for assembling and dismantling the base with the seat, the fulcrum of the project, which makes it easy to ship and assemble. The two elements that compose the chair are joined without using screws, simply with a patented interlocking system. The occasion was the award ceremony of the Compasso d’Oro ADI 2011 in Rome. “We met Patrick Jouin for the first time at the design world’s most important event. In that prestigious setting, in which both of us received accolades, the foundations of our collaboration were laid,” says Monica Pedrali, CEO of the family business. “I immediately understood there would be an affinity and harmony between us,” adds the designer, following the thread of his memories. There is an almost ascetic rigor in the work of Ronan Bouroullec. We have discovered the serial progress of his artistic practice in recent years, since publications and exhibitions have made his everyday exercise public, using multiple techniques aimed at the definition of a language he identifies with the concept of assembly itself. PROJECTS The project Réenchanter la Villa Médicis is an extraordinary example of how the value of the historical heritage can be enhanced by contemporary arts and design, in a celebration of beauty and artistic crafts. In keeping with a program begun in 2021 under the guidance of Sam Stourdzé, director of the French Academy, located in Villa Medici, Rome, the refurbishment of twenty-one salons and guest rooms in the building is now underway. In 2022, six reception rooms were completed under the curatorship of Silvia Venturini Fendi and Kim Jones, artistic directors of Fendi, who involved designers such as Chiara Andreatti, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and Toan Nguyen in the creation of the furnishings. A truly outstanding year for the Maison founded by Sotirio Bulgari in 1884. Project by ESTÚDIO CAMPANA We met with Humberto Campana in the new studio in São Paulo, which was selected together with Fernando eight months after the latter’s premature death in November 2022, at the age of 61.
