• I had been trying to fish the No Sancocho Sailfish Shootout, hosted by Capt. David Salazar and his wife, Kristen, at Guatemala’s Casa Vieja Lodge, but magazine deadlines kept getting in the way. In November 2021, the stars finally aligned, and we put together a Marlin team to fish it: myself, senior editor Capt. Jen Copeland, publisher Natasha Lloyd and group publisher Scott Salyers. This event is based on charity and an all-around good time rather than big money. Tournament rules penalize each angler $20 for a missed sailfish bite, with an additional $50 for a marlin miss and $100 for the dreaded “zing pow.” The money helps support the local primary school in Puerto San Jose, as well as other special projects in the community. Born on St. Patrick’s Day in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1929, Bob attended St. Joseph’s University and the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained his law degree. After 25 years of a successful South Jersey trial and business law practice, he turned his focus to the Viking Yacht Company, which he owned with his brother Bill. Together they grew Viking into the No. 1 sport-fishing yacht manufacturer in the United States. Bob served as Viking’s chairman of the board for 57 years, including a tumultuous period in 1991 when a federal 10 percent luxury tax was imposed on yachts. • The past four-plus decades of the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Jackpot have not only witnessed the unprecedented growth of the event, but that of the surrounding community of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, as well. Bob Bisbee founded the tournament in 1980 when he and 10 friends challenged each other to a friendly competition in their favorite Mexican destination, located at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula. As the original event became established, the Bisbee family added the Los Cabos Offshore in 1997, and then the East Cape Offshore in 2000.
