Stress is a good thing when it comes to your bones. But new research says that most of us don’t get the impact our skeletons need—brisk walking, for instance, won’t do the trick. What will: 20 jumps per day. Premenopausal women who tried this increased their hip-bone density by 0.5% after 4 months, while women who didn’t jump lost an average of 1.3%. “Bone is a living tissue; it adapts when stressed,” says lead researcher Larry Tucker of Brigham Young University. “Jumping puts impact on hip and leg muscles, which in turn stress the bones they’re attached to.”…

Humble vinegar has been used as a disinfectant since Roman times, but its germ-killing power is wowing scientists anew: Acetic acid, the active ingredient, kills the drug-resistant bacteria that causes tuberculosis, finds a new study published in mBio. The researchers suggest that vinegar could be useful as a low-cost medical disinfectant sometime in the near future. In the meantime, you can use store-bought white vinegar as a cheap, nontoxic cleanser at home: To kill bacteria, cover dirty surfaces with vinegar and wait 20 minutes before wiping it off.
