One of the things I just love about textile art and embroidery is the connection between traditional techniques and modern styles. Take, for instance, Loëtitia Gibier’s stunning cover project – based on traditional folk-art style, Loëtitia’s project is nevertheless a breath of fresh air. With a modern colour scheme and clever use of stumpwork techniques, this project won’t fail to provide a new challenge to even the most experienced of stitchers! It’s also simply beautiful to behold. If you are looking for a challenge, this folk-style butterfly piece is for you! Not only are a variety of stitches used, but there are many stumpwork elements, from the detached wings to the flower petals. • For Gutermann Sew All, I use an embroidery size 10 or 12.• For one or two strands of stranded cotton, I recommend using an embroidery needle size 10.• For Aurifil cotton 12, use an embroidery size 7 or 9.• For stitching size 15 seed beads, an embroidery needle size 12 is needed.• For all surface work, such as needlelace or raised stem band, switch to a blunt needle, like a tapestry needle. When stitching beads, go through the beads at least twice to make sure they are secure and stay where you want them.• Use the tweezers to bend sharp angles when using wires.
