THE WRECKS OF three Dutch ships sunk off Indonesia during WWII appeared to have disappeared from the sea bed, scavenged – it seems – for their scrap metal.
The Netherlands defence ministry has confirmed that the wrecks of HNLMS De Ruyter and HNLMS Java are completely missing, and that a large piece of HNLMS Kortenaer has vanished. All three ships sank during the Battle of the Java Sea – a disastrous defeat for Dutch, British, American and Australian sailors by Japanese forces in February 1942.
