As I took my walk along the beach this morning, the sun rising over Rangitoto Island in a blaze of glory and the air already a balmy 23°C, I found myself reflecting on the summer to date. And what a summer!
Sunshine and warmth have characterised the season so far, drawing New Zealanders in their thousands to the water. After months of lockdowns and restrictions, Aucklanders flocked to the region’s beaches and coastal parks during the holiday break and every weekend since.
Of course, as usual many Aucklanders left for the holiday hotspots of Northland and the Coromandel. Also as usual, an armada of cruising boats, power and sail, made its customary exodus after Christmas, emptying marinas. But enough Aucklanders stayed behind to make the beaches as busy as I’ve…
