MY DAD HAD A sweet tooth and grew up eating his mother's fabulously decadent goodies. When I was only 8, his mother (my grandma) passed away, and my mom worked really hard on recreating his childhood favorites. My grandmother didn't leave any written recipes, so each baking experience was an attempt to get as close as possible to the original. My brother and sister and I would wait with glee to see my dad's reaction to the offering of the day: strawberry cream pie, banana cream pie, butterscotch pie (we've not yet been able to replicate that one).
