For as long as I can remember, my dad has given thanks before every meal. His brief prayer always includes appreciation for the food — not just what we’re about to eat but also our freedom and ready access to nourishment — and it usually lists a few immediate experiences for which we as a family are thankful. Then there’s the one day of the year when he asks us all to participate (you guessed it — that day is coming!). After my dad says grace on Thanksgiving, he has us go ’round the table and share some of the things, big and small, that we’re grateful for.
