Springtime never fails to fill me with anticipation— for the latest clothes, accessories, and makeup of the season, and for the bold new heights Bazaar strives to reach as we cover it all. No one flies higher than this month’s cover star, Rihanna, who embodies the pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart in a fashion shoot on the ground and in the air. ON THE MORNING of February 12, 1947, Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow attended the presentation of Christian Dior’s first collection at the house’s salon at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Ninety looks were shown, punctuated by a radical silhouette with a tight waist and a full skirt that ended mid-calf. Afterward, Snow remarked, “It’s quite a revolution, dear Christian. Your dresses have such a new look.” A reporter from Reuters overheard Snow’s comment, and the next day, papers around the world carried the news of Dior’s “New Look,” which Snow would soon feature prominently in the magazine.
