NUTRITION WHY SHOULD I KEEP HYDRATED? Our bodies are made up of 60% water. Water has many roles in the body but when exercising, water is vital to help maintain blood volume and regulate our core temperature. During exercise to help keep us cool, we sweat and lose water through evaporation on our skin. If we do not replace this lost water, we may become dehydrated. When we become dehydrated (as defined by a body fluid deficit >2% of body mass), blood volume decreases. This makes it more difficult to maintain blood pressure and blood flow. This puts a strain on our cardiovascular system and can make exercise harder, speed up fatigue and impact on cognitive performance and brain function. You started out as a professional dancer. Why did you move to golf? I started dancing at age 2 and competing at 7. My dance schedule was from the minute I finished school until 10pm. The only day off I had was Sundays, which was when (at aged 5) my father first introduced me to golf. At first, I didn’t like it and was under the impression that it was a “guy” sport. At 12, dad decided to put me in our country clubs golf camp where I met other girls who played. That got me excited and when I heard they competed in tournaments every Monday, I wanted to join. As I mentioned in our last issue, I’m blown away and excited to be part of an industry that supports each other and this sport. I was honoured to be invited to this year’s conference where Golf Australia, the PGA and the WPGA hosted an event with over 250 delegates. Jess Abercrombie, 29, is the Biodiversity Manager at The Grange Golf Club in South Australia. She is currently studying a Diploma in Conservation Land Management and an Associate Degree in Mining Engineering.
